Sri Lanka Attractions

Here are some of the sights of Sri Lanka. We draw up a complete route with a selection of interesting places individually.

Fort Galle

On the south side of the island is the stunning Galle Fort, a mix of Asian, British, Portuguese and Dutch architecture.

In fact, this building is a real city with amazingly beautiful buildings and military installations. The monument is protected by UNESCO.

Temple of the Tooth Buddha

Of all the Buddhist temples that have survived on the island, this one is the most famous. It is located in the city of Kandy and is one of the elements of the architectural ensemble on the territory of the royal palace.

The temple of the Buddha's tooth is also known under a different name - Sri Dalada Maligawa. UNESCO included it on its World Heritage List. In Sri Lanka, this temple is highly revered by Buddhists and is one of the main places of pilgrimage.

The history of the temple dates back to the XNUMXth century, it was built at a time when the country was ruled by King Vimaladharmasuriya I. The original building intended to store a tooth has not survived to this day. The relic was transported to Dumbara. In the XNUMXth century, a new temple of the Buddha's tooth was built in Kandy.

Sigiriya

A complex called Lion Rock has been built in the vicinity of the ancient city of Sigiriya, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Many tourists consider Sigiriya the most famous attraction of the island and come here to admire the palace built on the top of the cliff and the ancient buildings at its foot. Another attraction of Sigiriya is the gardens with many artificial reservoirs. Moreover, those located in the southern part are supplied with water from the ancient water supply system that has survived to this day.

According to the old legend told by the guides, on the top of the cliff once stood a palace where the Sinhalese ruler, King Kasyapa (Kashyapa) lived. But the archaeologists who excavated here do not agree with this statement. Even in Sigiriya, you can walk in the beautiful gardens, admire the mirrored wall, the colorful frescoes on the walls preserved from ancient times, numerous terraces and pools.

Sri Lanka Cuisine

National dishes are characterized by spicy and spicy flavors. The cuisine does not differ in variety and sophistication. Many dishes include foods such as coconut milk and specialty packs of spices and herbs.

Roti

Although the dish is not considered the most popular, we recommend that you definitely try this stuffed tortilla. The taste of roti is very reminiscent of chorizo, it is its Mexican counterpart.

Hoppers (also called appa)

When traveling in Sri Lanka, be sure to try hoppers, this dish (pancake) is considered a cult. The hoppers are made with rice flour, local palm wine and coconut milk. Since a wok is used for frying, the edges are thin with a thick center.

Fried rice

The basis of many national dishes is fried rice, to which you can add various ingredients: seafood, chicken meat, various vegetables, eggs. Street vendors prepare a dish in a wok and offer it to passers-by.
